Ha was born in Little Welnetham on 29th December 1889 (1st qtr 1890 Thingoe 4a:740), son of Edward and Emily Ann AMBLER(née HOLMES)
1891 census...Aged 1, he was at The School, Little Welnetham with his father Edward AMBLER, [32] carpenter, born Lavenham; mother Emily [36] born London, Middlesex; sister Mary [10]; brothers Charles [9] and Edward [5] ( all the children born in Little Welnetham) and a visitor Annie Pyett [26] from London, Middlesex 1901 census...Aged 11, he was still at The School with his parents (mother now recorded as born in Islington) and brother Edward. 1911 census...Aged 21, he was a drummer in the 3rd Middlesex in India. His parents were still in Little Welnetham with his sister Mary, now Head Teacher. |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 14th March 1905 and served in Ireland, South Africa, Hong Kong, Tientsin, Singapore and India before posting to the BEF on
19th January 1915.
The Battalion war diary has :- 15-2-15...The day passes quietly in the vicinity of M trench. The new P and O trenches were occupied by B and C Coys. The Germans occupied the original O trench and a portion of the original P trench. The Germans kept up a heavy fire from these trenches........an attempt was made to repair P trench by the Buffs-East Surrey- and 5th Northumberland Fusiliers. The Buffs took a portion of P trench and held it till relieved by the Suffolk Regt. The battalion was relieved by the Suffolk Regt and were ordered to proceed to Ypres.. Casualties 4 officers killed 3 wounded, men 44 killed, 156 missing .
