George Albert Newman born in 1891 in Denham (Thingoe Q3-1891 4A:732), baptised in Dalham 28th February 1892, son of Albert John and Mary Ann NEWMAN (née SPARROW) of Dalham.
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Meadow Cottages, Lackford with his father Albert NEWMAN [30] stockman, born Dalham; his mother Mary A [28] born Denham; sister Martha T [8] born Dalham; brothers Arthur F [4] born Dalham, Edward H [2] born Denham. 1911 census...Aged 19 he may be the George Newman who was at Stanhope Lines, Aldershot, albeit in Suffolk Regiment and recorded as born Chevington. His parents were at Lackford with sister Edith [8] born Lackford; brothers Arthur, Edward and twins Sidney and Stanley [1] born Lackford. The George Newman, registered death Cambridge Q3-1915 3B:484, was born 1891 As can be seen from the pension card below, his parents were at Culford Heath, Ingham, untl his mother died, when father moved to Bridge Cottage, Stoke by Nayland. |

Not finding a medal index card may mean he never served abroad. The Personal Effects card gives his father as Albert and his death at Cambridge Hospital. Having his sole legatee as his father would suggest he was unmarried. It also records that the war gratuity was in-admissable, this may be covered by "When his total war service does not amount to more than 6 months a soldier will not be eligible for the gratuity unless a portion of the service has been rendered overseas." This again may reinforce the lack of medals stated earlier. Another puzzle therefore is his regimentaL number as low as #34, albeit he apparently had 4764 earlier in his service. The Veterinary Corps did not receive the prefix Royal until late in 1918 |
