MILLER, Hugh

No.1657, Trooper, Hugh MILLER
Aged 19

Bethune's Mounted Infantry
He died of his Wounds on 31st March 1902

It is not always possible to match the soldier with the civilian with these Boer War casualties.
That means I can only record "most likely to be" in many cases for the civilian identity

Apparently:-
Hugh MILLER was born in 1882 (2nd qtr Mildenhall 4a:661) son of John and Frances A MILLER (née RAVEN)

1891 census...Aged 8, one of twins, he was at North Road, Mildenhall with his father John MILLER [47] veterinary surgeon, born Willingham, Cambs; his mother Frances 48] born Mundford; sisters Alice [23] born Littleport and Edith [17]; brothers Cecil [15], Fred [13], Frank [10], Mansel [8] and Edward [6]. All the children except Alice were born in Mildenhall

By 1901 census just his parents and sister Alice remained at North Terrace. Hugh has not been found in this census, presumably in South Africa, initially as a civilian.

Enlisted first in the Imperial Hospital Corps on 8th March 1901, discharged from there on 20th July 1901 and enlisted in Bethune's Mounted cavalry on 12th February 1902 at Durban.
He is known to have also served with Natal Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Loxton's Horse and with Reynold's Scouts.

He was wounded at Van Vuurenshoek on 3oth March 1902 and died the next day.

His Queens South Africa medal carries the clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902
Hugh Miller is commemorated the plaque in St.Mary's Church, Mildenhall
also the Boer War Memorial, Cornhill, Bury St.Edmunds
