Richard Mingay was born in Pakenham (4th qtr 1870 Thingoe 4a;474), son of Charles and Eliza MINGAY(née MELTON). Baptised in St.Mary's, Pakenham, on 3rd September 1871.

1871 census...Aged 10 months, he was at Bridge Street, Pakenham with his father Charles Mingay [36] horsekeeper; his mother Eliza [32]; brothers Arthur [13] farm labourer, William [11] farmer's boy and John [8]; sister Ellen [4] born Norton. All except his sister Ellen were born in Pakenham.

1881 census...Aged 10, a labourer, he was at High Field, Pakenham with his parents (father now a labourer); brothers William (horsekeeper), John (farm labourer); sisters Ellen, Eliza [7] and Annie E [4] both born in Pakenham.

1891 census...Aged 20, a farm labourer, he was still at High Field with his parents,; brothers Arthur Albert and John (both farm labourers); sister Annie Elizabeth; cousin Arthur Mingay MASON [7] born Pakenham.

1901 census...Aged 30,a horseman, he was at Grimstone Road, Pakenham with his widowed mother; brother John and cousin Arthur MASON (both horsemen).

1911 census...Aged 40, a farm labourer, he was at The Street, Pakenham with his mother and brother John (horseman). His mother had lost 3 of her 9 children.

On the pension card his mother was at The Street, Pakenham.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
Nothing has been found to reveal how he died. Having just the War Medal, but no Victory Medal indicates he never served in a theatre of war. 1st (Garrison) Battalion was raised in December 1915 and served in India from February 1916, until disbanded in January 1920. The use of such as these "Old Sweats" released the younger personnel from Garrison duties for front line service.
