James Saunders was born in Pakenham (3rd qtr 1868 Thingoe 4a:575) son of James and Mary Ann SAUNDERS (née HAILSTONE).
Baptised at St.Mary's, Pakenham on 6th September 1868.
1871 census...Aged 2, he was at Barton Road, Pakenham with his father James SAUNDERS [39] farm labourer; his mother Mary Ann [25]; brother John [1], grandfather, widower George HAILSTONE [70] and widower uncle William HAILSTONE [34] both farm labourers. All were born in Pakenham. 1881 census...Aged 13, a labourer, he was at Windmill Road, Pakenham with his parents, brothers John and William [9] and sister Emma [7] 1891 census...Aged 23, a cowman, he was at Euston Road, Rushford, boarding with Robert and Fanny SAGE and their son Wiliam. His widowed mother was at Bridge Road, Pakenham with his brother John. His father had died in 1889. 1901 census...Aged 32, a farm labourer, he was at Bury Road, Pakenham with his mother and brother John (farm labourer). 1911 census...Aged 41, a farm labourer, he was at Queach Farm, Great Barton lodging with the ARBON family. He enlisted in Ixworth.
The 5th May 1915 the Battalion was under heavy mortar fire. The war diary has:- May 5th 1915 - Huts BRIELEN. Owing to shelling Battn moved to shelter trenches in fields in rear of huts - they spent the day there. YPRES and environs heavily shelled. CWGC show 8 killed and just one has an identified grave.
