Reginald Raymond Tipple was born in Pakenham on 27th March 1892 (2nd qtr 1892 Thingoe 4a:768), son of Sidney Charles and Ellen TIPPLE (née NUNN). Baptised in St Mary's, Pakemnham on 5th June 1892.

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Bailey Pool,Pakenham with his father Sidney TIPPLE [31] woodsman born Honington; his mother Ellen [31] ; brothers Lawrence [7] and Claude [2]; sisters Florence [4] and Ida [10 months]. All except his father were born in Pakenham.

1911 census...Aged 19, a hurdle maker, he was at Pudding Hall, Pakenham with his parents; brothers Lawrence (hurdle maker), Claude and Horace [8]; sisters Florence and Ida.

On the pension card his mother was at Pudding Hall, Pakenham.



He enlisted Bury St. Edmunds.

In a letter from the Captain of A Company, 2nd South Staffs, 19 Nov 1918, to a Mrs Young :-
"Dear Mrs Young, In answer to your letter of the 10th inst.,regarding information concerning the late Pte R.Tipple.I very much regret to say that he was killed during the advance on the 29th September 1918. He suffered no pain, his death was instantaneous, being caused by the concussion of the bursting of a shell. His body was taken down the line and buried in the village cemetery of Noyelles which is situated five miles south west of Cambrai. He was always a good willing soldier and was highly esteemed by all who knew him in the Company, he is greatly missed by all. The Officers and men of his Company join with me in sending you and Mr. and Mrs.Tipple the most sincere sympathy in your great loss."

On 29th September 1918 the battalion was NE of Noyelles-sur-L'Escaut, in support. A and B Coys moved forward occupying MARCOING SUPPORT 400 yards East of Canal, C and D Coys remaining in Railway Embankment W of Canal. Continual shelling by enemy on our positions caused casualties to approx 30 O.R.
