John Lionel Burgess was born in Bombay according to "Soldiers Died". Son of Edward Simeon and Elizabeth BURGESS (née GIBSON).

Their father was born in Ferozepore, Bengal in 1850 and married his mother in Kussowlie, Bengal in 1875. He enlisted in Winchester when resident in Bournemouth. The right hand medal shown is the French Croix de Guerre, for which John was gazetted on 9th December 1916. Badge for 14th Reserve Cavalry Regiment not found, they existed only to train troops for other units. Badge shown is actually a shoulder title for 4th Nigeria Regiment No information found regarding where John died. His name on the Pakenham memorial seems to rely on the fact that his father was the vicar at the time. It was not unusual in those days for a vicar, having a relative killed in the war, to have the name recorded on the parish war memorial.
