Aged 39

19th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers (3rd Salford Pals)
formerly 7890, Cambridgeshire Regiment
Died of his Wounds on 17th July 1918

Walter Charles Foreman was born in Pakenham Fen on 30th November 1878 (1st qtr 1879 Thingoe 4a:573), son of James and Ellen Maria FOREMAN (née BRINKLEY). Baptised in St Mary's, Pakenham on 5th January 1879.

1881 census...Aged 2, he was at Fen Road, Pakenham with his father James J FOREMAN [32] farm labourer; his mother Ellen [37] born Norton; brothers John[12], and Herbert [7] (blind); sisters Eliza [9] and (Jane) Annie [5]. All except his mother were born in Pakenham.

1891 census...Aged 12, he was at The Street, Pakenham with his parents (now recorded as married); brothers John (farm labourer) and Herbert; sisters Eliza and Sarah [7]; nephew Walter [2 months].

1901 census...Aged 22, a farm labourer, he was still at The Street with his parents and nephew Charles [2] born Bury St. Edmunds.

On 1st July 1905, in St Mary's Pakenham he married Fanny DURHAM of Ripple, Worcs.

1911 census...Aged 31, a farm labourer, he was at The Street, Pakenham with his wife Fannie [31] and daughter Gloria [4] born Pakenham. His parents were still at The Street, mother had lost 2 of her 8 children.

He later moved to Boxted.

On the pension card the guardian of his children was E.SKELT of Rockalls Cottages.Polstead. (his sister Eliza, who was witness at his wedding and also his sole legatee). The children were Elviror Ellen [9-6-1906] and Roland Francis [29-11-1911]. Apparently Fanny died a few days after giving birth to Roland. Elviror here must be the Gloria in the 1911 census, actually registered as Elvira Ellen. His father had died in 1914.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds when resident in Boxted.
Dying of wounds and his Army records not found, it is impossible to say where he was and when he was wounded. The battalion around that time were in the area of Vlamertinghe Chateau Farm in Belgium. Esquelbecq was base for some Casualty Clearing Stations.
