William John Hull was born in Grimstone End, Pakenham on 17th September 1880 (4th qtr 1880 Thingoe 4a:568), son of Henry and Elizabeth HULL
(née BARTON). Baptised on 7th November 1880 at Pakenham St.Mary's.
1881 census...Aged 6 months, he was at Grimstone End, Pakenham with his father Henry HULL [37] un-employed bricklayer born Stowlangtoft; his mother Elizabeth [31] born Great Milton, Oxon; brother Robert [5] and sister Harriet E [3] both born Ribblehead, Yorks and brother Charles H [2] born Troughgate, Lancs. 1891 census...Aged 10, he was still at Grimstone End with his parents (father now farm labourer); brothers Robert (bricklayer's labourer), Charles, Frederick [4] and Frank [1] both born Pakenham; sister Florence [6] born Pakenham. 1901 census...Aged 20, he was a Private in the 3rd Suffolks at St Peter Port, Guernsey. His parents were still at Grimstone End, Pakenham with his brothers Robert E (bricklayer), Frederick (bricklayer's labourer), Frank and Thomas [9]. His father died in 1905. 1911 census...Aged 30, he was a horseman on farm, living alone at The Fen, Pakenham.. His widowed mother was at The Fen, Pakenham with his brothers Frank and Thomas ( farm labourers) and sister Florence. His mother had lost 3 of her 9 children, she died in 1915. |

Enlisted in 1898 in the 3rd Suffolks (no.4565). In South Africa he was captured on 6th January 1900 at Colesberg at what is now known as Suffolk Hill. His Queen's South Africa medal has clasps
for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. In the Great War he enlisted in Selby, Yorkshire Wounded on 17th May near Poperinghe, as the battalion was being relieved, he died at a Base Hospital in Boulogne.
