Stephen Henry LAMBERT was born in Pakenham on 15th July 1886 (3rd qtr 1886 Thingoe 4a:686), son of Arthur Bray and Elizabeth Jane LAMBERT (née BLEE). Baptised in St.Mary's, Pakenham as Stephen Henry Bray LAMBERT on 5th September 1886. Regardless of GRO birth registration, all the children seem to have BRAY added as an addition given name.

1891 census...Aged 4, he was at Grimstone End, Pakenham with his father Arthur B LAMBERT [53] farm labourer, born Pakenham; his mother Elizabeth J [38] born Helston, Cornwall; brother Harry B [11] born Maidstone, Kent; sisters Linda B [9] born Maidstone, Star B [7] and Ada B [1] both born in Pakenham.

1901 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at Grimstone End with his widowed mother and brother Harry (farm labourer). His father had died in 1897.

1911 census...Aged 24, a farm labourer, he was at 67 Northbank Road, Walthamstow with his sister Linda and her husband Thomas POLLEY [28] commercial clerk born Stratford, and their sons Stanley [3] and Leslie {2} both born Walthamstow



He attested in Bury St. Edmunds for the militia on 25th April 1904, giving his age as 17 years 9 months, a labourer born in Pakenham, working for Sir Walter Greene at Nether Hall. He gave as next of kin his mother Mrs Jane Lambert of Pakenham Fen.
He was 5 feet 5.5 inches tall, weighed 115 lbs chest 32.5 to 34.5 inches, grey eyes, dark brown hair, Church of England.
No.6509, he was posted from 3rd Suffolks (Militia) to the Suffolk Regiment on 18th July 1904 where he attested as being 18 years old, a labourer, born Pakenham. He was now 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighed 127 lbs, chest 33 to 35 inches.

Re-numbered as 6849, he signed for 3 years service with the colours (9 on Reserve) and on 24th November 1904 posted to the 1st battalion. Transferred on completion to Reserves on 17th July 1907.

He was arrested by the Civil Power, tried and convicted of misdemeanour and sentenced to 10 shilling fine or 7 days hard labour. This he started on 23rd March 1908 and was released on 29th.

Mobilised in 1914 in Australia, he was discharged at Victoria Barracks, Melbourne as medically unfit on 13th August 1914. Australian records have him as Stephan Lambert.

He attested on 17th November 1916 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, giving his age as 30 years 4 months, born Pakenmham, next of kin mother Mrs Elizabeth Lambert, Pakenham Fen, later changed to 17 College Road, Walthamstow. He was a labourer, resident in Maribyrnong, Victoria, Australia. He had served 3 years in the Suffolk Regiment. The answer 'yes' to the question, had he ever been rejected for military service had been replaced in another hand by 'no'. He was 5 feet 6.5 inches tall, weighed 11 stone, chest 37.5 to 40.5 inches
As No.3195, he sailed from Melbourne with the 8th Reinforcements on board HMAT "Medic" on 16th December, arriving Plymouth on 18th February 1917 and Hurdcott Camp (Salisbury Plain), that day, taken on strength by No.15 Training Battalion.
On 14th June 1917 he went via Southampton to Le Havre and joined 5th Australian Base Depot, then was taken on strength of 59th Battalion, Australian Infantry on 28th June 1917.
He was admiited to hospital on 9th October 1917 (PUO = Pyrexia Unknown Origin = Army speak for unknown fever) and rejoined his unit on 11th October.
On 9th April 1918 he was killed in action. He was buried at Corbie Hamelet, but later moved to Adelaide Cemetery, Villers Bretonneux. Adelaide Cemetery was from where the body of Australia's Unknown Warrior was exhumed and returned to Australia.
