Benjamin Thomas Gibbons was born in 1921 in Risby,(Bury St.Edmunds Q2-1921 4A:1775), son of John and Agnes GIBBONS (née BAILEY)

In the 1939 register, at 23 South Street, Risby were his father John [12-8-1893] incapacitated; mother Agnes F [1-10-1896] and widowed grandmother Florence BAILEY [1-5-1868]. There is one closed record. .





His death was registered in Buckrose, E.Yorkshire (Buckrose Q4-1943 9D:71).

Bury Free Press of 16th October 1943. DEATHS - GIBBONS - On 9th October 1943. L-Cpl B.T.Gibbons. R.A.S.C. while on active service, died suddenly in Base Hospital, Driffield, only son of Mr.and Mrs. J.Gibbons of 23 South Street, Risby.

A RISBY FUNERAL - Young soldier's passing

The funeral took place at St.Giles' Church, Risby, of L/Cpl. B.T.Gibbons,R.A.S.C.,only son of Mr.and Mrs. J.Gibbons, 23,Sioth Street, Risby, whose sudden death whil eon active service took place at a base hospital in Yorkshire at the early age of 22 years. The Rector officiated, and Mrs A.M.Elford presided at the organ.
The deceased's favourite hymns were sung, "Abide with Me" and "To be a Pilgrim" and the 23rd Psalm.
Those present were C.S.M.Eccles (representing his Corps), Mr. and Mrs J.Gibbons (parents), Cpl.W.M.Gibbons A.T.S. (sister), Miss E Mullaney (fiancée), Mrs Ben Bailey (grandmother), R.W.Bailey R.N. (uncle), Mrs T.Spencer and Mrs A. Rollison (auns, Mrs G.Gibbons (aunt) Mr. T.Spence (uncle), Miss N.Hazelwood and Mrs W. Bailey (Newmarket, cousins) ...Mrs R.W.Marriage (representing Maddison & Marriage, deceased's late employers, Bury St.Edmunds)..the list of attenders and floral tributes is very extensive...
The coffin was of plain elm with brass fittings and bore the inscription "L/Cpl. B.T.Gibbons, died Oct.9th 1943, aged 22 years and was borne by Sergt.P.Leonard, Sergt.W.Ashman, Pte W.Palmer, and PteR.C.Smith, members of the Home Guard. The grave had been lined with flowers and evergreens by children attending Risby School, which the deceased attended.
