William James Wallis was born in Barrow (1st qtr 1881 Thingoe 4a:593) son of George and Matilda WALLIS (née WRIGHT). The surname appears at times as WALLACE.
1881...Aged 1 month, he was at the Green, Barrow with his father George WALLIS [28] farm labourer born Pelton, Durham; his mother Matilda [21] born Bury St.Edmunds; sister Ann E [1] born Barrow 1891...Aged 10, William J WALLACE was at 11 South side of Green, Barrow with his widower father; sisters Ann E and Mary Ann [6]; brothers Arthur [8] and Lawrence G [4]. All the children born in Barrow. His mother had died in 1889. 1901 census...Aged 20, a farm labourer, he was still in Barrow with his father and brothers Arthur and George (Lawrence) (both farm labourers.) He married Minnie FULLER in 1904 1911 census...Aged 30 a horsekeeper, he was at Barrow Hill with his wife Minnie; son Bertie William [3-8-1904] and daughter Audrey Phyllis [14-9-1906], all born in Barrow His family were later of Drift Cottage, The Green, Barrow. No documentation has been found linking him with Risby, but family imform me they moved back to Barrow after his death |

The battalion was in trenches from Cameron Alley (Boyan 44 to Boyan 52.(Just north of Loos) Unusually for a war diary, OR deaths were named in the war diary:- 19th, Pte W Wallis (17966) W bartram (26928) killed. Pte M Hood (1612) died of wounds. 5 OR wounded; 2nd Lt S G BCowper wounded but remained on duty Reinforcement 12 OR. Rain, rain )
