John Buckle was born on 17th October 1893 in Rougham (4th qtr Thingoe 4a:718) son of George Henry and Laura BUCKLE (née CATCHPOLE). Baptised in St.Mary's, Rougham on 21st January 1894.

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Gorse Cottages, Rougham with his father George BUCKLE [46] horseman on farm; his mother Laura [40] born Barnham, Norfolk; brothers William [19] farm labourer, Ernest [16] farm labourer, Henry [13] shepherd's page, Arthur [9] and Frederick [1];sister Agnes [11]. All except his mother were born in Rougham.

1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was still at Gorse Cottages with his parents; brothers William Sharman, Ernest George, Henry Charles, Arthur Albert, and Frederick James. All the brothers except Frederick were farm labourers.

On the pension card his mother was still at Gorse Cottages.


He enlisted in Rougham.
