Bertie Howlett was born in Bury St. Edmunds (3rd qtr 1893 Bury St. Edmunds 4a:761), son of William and Mary Ann HOWLETT (née LOWE)

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Church Cottage, Rougham with his father William HOWLETT [48] farm labourer, born Woolpit; his mother Mary Ann [50] born Paddington, London; sister Mabel [20] born Newport. Essex; brothers Harry [18] farm labourer born Sible Hedingham, Leonard [15] electrical engineer born Beyton and Edward [12] born Rougham.

1911 census...Aged 18, a junior clerk for County Council, he was still at Church Cottage with his parents, father now a domestic gardener. His mother had lost 2 of her 8 children.

On the pension card his father was still at Church Cottage, Rougham. His mother had died in 1913. His grantee was sister Mrs Mabel CAPON.



He enlisted in London.
The battalion had been with the 2nd Army in the attack on the Messines-Wytschaete Ridge. 19 mines were blown on 7th to start the attack. They suffered 2 officer and 26 OR killed, 2 officers died of wounds, 2 officers wounded, 120 OR wounded, 1 officer and 90 OR missing. They reached their objective, OBLONG RESERVE, about half way between St Eloi and Hollebecke
