Charles William Hunt was born in Rougham (4th qtr 1895 Thingoe 4a:746), son of William John and Elizabeth HUNT (née WARREN). Baptised in Rougham St.Mary's on 10th November 1895.

1901 census...Aged 5, he was at the Battlies, Rougham with his father William John HUNT [29] horsekeeper on farm; his mother Elizabeth [40] born Beyton; sisters Araminta [13] and Clarinda [11]; brother Frederick G [3 months]. All except his mother were born in Rougham.

1911 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was still at Battlies Cottages with his parents; brother Frederick George and widowed grandmother Ann WARREN [83] born Hessett.

On the pension card his parents were at Battlies Cottages, Rougham.



He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. on 9th January 1915 for 4 years in the 5th Suffolks (Territorial Force). He gave his age as 19 years 3 months, height 5 feet 5 inches, chest 35 to 37 inches. Next of kin was his father John HUNT of Battlies Cottages, Rougham. No.2997 he was embodied in the 5th Suffolks until 5th April 1916, when he enlisted in Norwich.
There he gave his age as 20 years 7 months, a labourer, born Rougham, Suffolk. He was 5 feet 4.5 inches tall, weighed 149 lbs, chest 34 to 36 inches, Church of England. Initially No.G/29258 15th (2nd Res)Bn, Royal Fusiliers.. He moved through the 39th and 9th Battalions in August, posted to BEF on 25th August before being transferred to the 8th East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) on 12th September 1916, re-numbered to G/12510.
He was attached to No.17 Trench Mortar Battery. He died of his wounds at No.10 General Hospital at St.Omer on 12th April 1917.
His records do not say where he was or when he was wounded. The battalion was in the Bully-Grenay area early in April 1917.
