James Frederick Miller was born in Hurst, Berkshire on 8th February 1895 (2nd qtr 1895 Wokingham 2c:387), son of William and Fanny Jane MILLER (née MOORE). Baptised in St.Nicholas, Hurst on 7th April 1895.

1901 census...Aged 6, he was visiting his grandparents at Blackthorpe, Rougham. Grandfather Frederick MOORE [58] carpenter born Bradfield St.George; his grandmother Emma [58] born Hessett. His parents were in Stowlangtoft with his sisters Edith E [7] born Ipswich and Beatrice [5]born Twyford, Berks.

1911 census...Aged 16, a carpenter, he was at Blackthorpe with his grandparents, aunt Agnes [39] a nurse born Rougham and uncle Frederick [17] (recorded as grandson of Frederick and Emma), a labourer, born Rougham. His parents were at 14 Westward Ho, Leiston with his sister Beatrice. His mother had lost 3 of her 6 children

On the pension card his parents lived at Westward Ho, Leiston



He enlisted in Leiston. His earlier Army number indicates enlisting early in 1914. From the date he arrived in France it may thought that he qualified for the clasp to his 1914 Star, however the 4th Suffolks spent some time training near St.Omer and the clasp required being within the range of enemy guns.
He was admitted to hospital at St.Omer on 14th September 1917 and was then assigned to a convalescent unit but was killed in a railway accident on the way there on 17th October.
