Charles Nice was born in Rougham (3rd qtr 1890 Thingoe 4a:701), son of Arthur and Alice NICE (née SQUIRREL)
1891 census...Aged 11 months, he was at Rougham Green with his father Arthur NICE [26] farm labourer born Rougham; his mother Alice [24] born Drinkstone; sister Annie [4] born Rougham; brother Arthur W [2] born Bury St. Edmunds. 1901 census...Aged 10, he was still at Rougham Green with his parents, brothers Arthur W, Francis [6] and Ernest [4]; sisters Ethel [8], Edith [2] and Clara [1]. 1911 census...Aged 20, a market gardener's labourer, he was at Rougham Green Cottages with his parents; brothers Francis (gardener's labourer) and Ernest; sisters Edith [12], Clara [11] and Lilian [4]. His mother had lost 3 of her 11 children. On the pension card his mother was at Thetford Road, Ixworth. |

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. The newspaper article confusingly has two letters from the 10th Worcestershire Regiment. All other sources have him in the Bedfordshires.
The battalion were at Pommiers prior to attacking Longueval on 27th July. (23 officers and 807 men started from Pommiers, reaching their starting point just south of Longueval (the old German 2nd line). They reached the edge of Delville Wood before being relieved and marching back to Pommiers, down to 14 officers and 505 men. On 30th at 6 p.m. they were ordered back to Longueval to reinforce 13th Brigade. There they tried to find the 2nd Scottish Borderers, but eventually set up their own defence line. These three days had dropped them down to 8 officers and just over 300 men.
