Frederick William Sparrow was born in Rougham (1st qtr 1893 Thingoe 4a:775), son of Ellen SPARROW. His mother married William HUNT in 1896.

1901 census...Aged 8, as Frederick William HUNT he was at 22 Kings Hall Street, Rougham with his step-father William HUNT [44] farm labourer; his mother Ellen [30] born Coney Weston; half sisters Elizabeth Mary HUNT[3] and Dorothy Helen HUNT [1]. All except his mother were born in Rougham.

1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer (now Frederick SPARROW), he was still at Kings Hall Street with his step-father William HUNT; his mother; half sisters Elizabeth, Dorothy, and Margaret [9]; half brothers William James HUNT [7] and Bertram Charles HUNT [5]. The new siblings also born in Rougham.

He married Minnie PULLIN [24-9-1897] in Iron Acton, Gloucestershire on 22nd October 1912. Their daughter Gwendoline Phyllis was born 31-10-1913

On the pension card his widow was at 46 King's Hall Street, Rougham

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. His earlier Suffolk Regiment number would indicate his being at least a Reservist pre war. This is not reflected on his medal index card so possibly an error on "Soldiers Died"
The 15th Suffolk on 6th November 1917 were taking part in the attack on trenches and redoubts covering Sheria (half way between Gaza and Beersheba). The attack started at 3 a.m. and before daybreak had suffered several casualties, one company had all its officers as casualties. However, supported by a Machine Gun Company, they resumed and drove the enemy out of all their objectives and were ordered to advance no further. A battery of guns and a large number of prisoners were taken. A counter attack was beaten off. CWGC records show 20 killed that day, all buried in Beersheba.
