Reginald Sturgeon was born in Rougham (3rd qtr 1897 Thingoe 4a:806), son of Horace and Edith STURGEON (née JOLLY)
His father was married to Edith Jolly, who died in 2nd qtr 1899 and his father then married Eva Mary COLEMAN in 4th qtr 1899. 1901 census...Aged 3, he was at The Royal Oak, Rougham with his father Horace STURGEON [31] publican; his step-mother Eva [27] born Rushbrooke; sister Margaret [8]; brothers Harold [7] and Morton [1]; his aunt Jessie COLEMAN [14] born Rushbrooke. All except his mother and aunt were born in Rougham. 1911 census...Aged 14, an assistant gamekeeper he was still at The Royal Oak with his father, stepmother Eva; sister Margaret; brothers Harold (farm labourer) and Morton; half sister Evelyn [9]. He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
On 21st March 1918, the start of the German Spring Offensive "The Kaiserschlacht", the 9th East Surreys were at Vermand. By the 26th they had been forced back to Fonches, between Hallu and Hattencourt. By this time they had been virtually wiped out, under 40 men answering the roll call. There is no war diary for the 27th. From 27th to 8th April the remnants of the 9th East Surreys were attached to the 8th Royal West Kents. It was during this period, 21st to 26th March, that Reginald was killed, or died of wounds. The special memorial signifies that his exact grave, like many here, is not actually known, only that they were buried here.
