On 21st March 1918, the start of the German Spring Offensive "The Kaiserschlacht", the 9th East Surreys were at Vermand. By the 26th they had been forced back to Fonches, between Hallu and Hattencourt. By this time they had been virtually wiped out, under 40 men answering the roll call. There is no war diary for the 27th. From 27th to 8th April the remnants of the 9th East Surreys were attached to the 8th Royal West Kents. It was during this period, 21st to 26th March, that Reginald was killed, or died of wounds.

The special memorial signifies that his exact grave, like many here, is not actually known, only that they were buried here.

The retreat of the 9th East Surreys 21-26 March, about 35 kilometres, heavy fighting all the way.
