Leonard Lionel Cornish was born in Rushbrooke (3rd qtr 1893 Thingoe 4a:751), son of Albert and Martha Edith(née CRACK)
1901 census...Aged 8, he was in Rushbrooke with his father Albert CORNISH [43] estate carpenter born Rougham; his mother Martha [41]; brother Bertram [16] assistant gamekeeper, Albert [12] and Percival M [10]; sisters Annie G [14], Alice M [5] and Helena M G [3]. All except his father were born in Rushbrooke. 1911 census...Aged 17 he was a billiard marker at the New Oxford and Cambridge Club, Westminster, with his brother Alan (page boy). His parents were still at 19 Rushbrooke with brother Albert and sister Maude. On the pension card his mother was at 19 Rushbrooke. His brother Albert was killed in France in 1916 see here |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 31st August 1914, giving his age as 21 years 1 month, a billiard marker born in Rushbrooke. He was 5 feet 5 .25 inches tall, weighed 108 lbs
chest 32.5 to 34.5 inches, Church of England Initially in the (6th Reserve Regt of Cavalry) 12th Lancers No.11097. promoted unpaid L/Cpl 9-11-1915, paid Cpl 20-2-1916, reverting to L/Cpl 24-3-1917. Arrived Rouen 30-3-1917 joining his squadron in the field on 3-5-1917, he reverted to Private at his own request on 14-4-1917. Promoted L/Cpl 3-4-1918..Some pages unreadable..he does appear to have been renumbered to 39883 and although CWGC have MGC (Infantry), his paperwork shows MGC (Cavalry). Army Form 5080 has both parents at 19 Rushbrooke, brothers Arthur [38] Henley St, Alcester; Bert [34]; Maurice [29]in Alcester and Alan [23] on HMS Starfish; sisters May JARMAN [36] Round House, Sicklesmere; Annie OFFORD [32] at 6 London Road Battersea and Maud [21] at 21 Portman Square, London He was buried in Mennevret Communal Cemetery German Extension grave 4C and re-interred at Grand-Seraucourt in 1925 The correct battalion war diary has not been identified
