William Curry was born in 1884 in Bury St.Edmunds (2nd qtr 1884 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:661), son of Jane CURRY. She married Walter BARKER in 1888
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Rushbrooke with his stepfather Walter BARKER [28] farm labourer born Rougham; his mother Jane [33] born Rougham; half brother Thomas [1] born Rushbrooke. 1901 census...Aged 17,(as BARKER) a farm labourer, he was still in Rushbrooke with his step-father and mother; half brothers Thomas, and Harry [6]. 1911 census...Aged 26 (as CURRY) a plate later on Great Eastern Railway, he was at 12 Rushbrooke with his step father and his mother; half-brothers Thomas William and Harry George, both farm labourers. In Christ Church, Tunstall, Staffs, he married Emma FRITH [14-2-1884] on 25th April 1915, of 3, Ward St., Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Their son Norman William was born in Tunstall on 16th February 1916. On the pension card his widow was at 3, Ward St., Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 17th Febraury 1915, giving his age as 30 years 10 months, single, a chauffeur of 12 Rushbrook Village.
He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighed 160 lbs, chest 36.5 to 39 inches.
Promoted L/Cpl on 17th February 1915 and Cpl on 7th May but reverted at own request to Private on 21st August 1915. Appointed L/Cpl 9th Febraury 1916. Posted to BEF 15th July 1915. Unable to find exactly where he was killed. The HQ of 283rd Company was at Boisleux au Mont on 15th May 1917 and remained there until the 31st. His was the only death in his Company that day.
