Gordon Douglas Gooch was born in Stanningfield on 12th September 1918 (4th qtr 1918 Sudbury 4a:1223) son of Tom and Clara GOOCH(née LAMBERT )

In the 1921 census he was 2 years 9 months old, in Shimpling, with his father Tom GOOCH [54] unemployed CC Labourer born Tostock; his mother Clara [44] born Cockfield; brothers Thomas [16] farm labourer born Cockfield, Edward [9] and Lelsie [8] both born Stanningfield; sisters Bessie [11] born Cockfield and Ethel [4] born Stanningfield.

In the 1939 register, a groom/chauffeur, he was at the Street, Shimpling with his widowed mother, brothers Edward [7-7-1911] a van driver, Leslie G [16-4-1913] farm labourer and Leonard [29-5-1921] on leave; sister Ethel May [29-10-1917].


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
He died while the battalion were vainly attempting to hold back the Japanese Army advancing south towards Singapore. Records show he was killed about 2 miles south od Senggarang, but his body was never recovered.
