Josiah Hale was born in Shimpling (2nd qtr 1889 Sudbury 4a:693) son of Barnard and Clara HALE (née MUSK). CWGC have his age incorrect by some way.
1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Shimpling Street with his father Barnard HALE [33] farm labourer; his mother Clara [32] born Stanningfield; brothers Sidney [9], Ernest [7] and Albert [4]. All except his mother were born in Shimpling 1901 census...Aged 12, still in Shimpling with his parents (father now recorded as born in Lawshall); brothers Sidney (yardman on farm), Ernest (farm labourer) Albert (farm labourer), Walter [6] and Miles [3]; sisters Annie [9] and one unnamed [under 1 month] (Violet May). 1911 census...Aged 22, a farm labourer, he was at Shimpling with his parents (father born Lawshall);brothers Ernest and Walter working on farm, Miles and sister Violet. He enlisted in Shimpling.
The battalion was temporarily attached to 18th Infantry Brigade at Maroc, employed in tactical digging. 2 men were killed by shell fire on 23rd; Charles Crack from Great Barton and Joseph.
