Harry Honeyball was born in Somerton (1st qtr 1894 Sudbury 4a:675), son of William and Lydia HONEYBALL (née SADLER)
1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Upper Street, Somerton with his father William HONEYBALL [37] groom/gardener born Hartest; his mother Lydia [35] born Somerton; sisters Ada Ellwn [13] born Hartest, Francis Louisa [11] and Florence Beatrice [8] both born Somerton. 1901 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was at 11 Upper Street, Somerton with his parents (father now recorded as born Brockley); sister Mabel [7] born Somerton. 1911 census...Aged 26, groom/gardener, he was at Ridgenalls Lodge, Great Horkesley, Essex with his parents and sister Mabel Elsie. He married Emily DEBENHAM [8-11-1884] in 1914. Their daughters were Sybil Irene [11-6-1915] and Joyce Olive [31-3-1917]. On the pension card his widow was first at Manor Farm, Somerton, moving to Mile End Farm, Hartest. |

He enlisted in Sudbury.
The Battalion war diary has :- 6 Sept...Front Line in front of HOOGE...Corps (British) on our left attacked some enemy posts- battles lasted several hours (morning). Light barrage put down by enemy on our left. At 7:15 pm enemy appeared to counter attack again - very heavy barrage put down all along our front - but no enemy attack. Barrage lasted an hour - all our telephone lines lasted for 45 minutes and line to one Coy for whole time. During night we carried on wiring, making of strong points 100 yards behind our line (3 such points) - joining up the two advance posts in GLENCORSE WOOD and improving our trenches. Only Harry and L/Cpl Holding killed. .
