Jesse Stiff was born in Brockley (3rd qtr 1888 Thingoe 4a:666) son of Alfred and Georgianna STIFF(née RUTTER)

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Cook's Road, Brockley with his father Alfred STIFF [35] farm labourer born Somerton; his mother Georgianna [35] born Boxted; sister Frances Louisa [10]; brothers Harry Joseph [9] and Lawrence John [7]. All the children except Jesse were born in Boxted.

1901 census...Aged 12, he was at 9 Upper Street, Somerton with his father Alfred STIFF [45] farm labourer born Somerton; his mother Georgianna [45] born Boxted; brothers Lawrence [17] farm labourer born Boxted and Albert [9] born Somerton.

1911 census...Aged 22 farm worker, he was at Upper Street, Somerton with his parents and brother Albert (groom)

On the pension card his mother was at Upper Street, Somerton, later moving to c/o Horse and Groom, Cornish Hall End nr Braintree.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds .
December 9th Jerusalem was taken, and on the 15th the 5th Suffolks were assaulting Bornat Hill. Despite machine gun fire, they reahed the lower slopes with few casualties, then climbed the slope, only to find the Turkish defenders had left. This however left the Suffolks on the receiving end of a heavy artillery bombardment causing 75 casualties.
