Frederick James Anniss was born in Stanningfield (3rd qtr 1887 Thingoe 4a:871) son of Frederick James and Mary Ann ANNISS (née SMITH)
Like his father, his birth was registered as Frederick James, so everyone simply called him James, including the Army. He was a cousin of Ernest Betts see here 1891 census...Aged 3, He was at Stanningfield Green with his father Frederick ANNISS [31] farm labourer; his mother Mary Ann [30] born Shimpling; sisters Anastasia [7] and Emma [4]. All except his mother born in Stanningfield 1901 census...Aged 13, a helper in garden, he was at "corner of the Green, Stanningfield with his parents ( father a gardener); sisters Emma, and Blach [8]. 1911 census...Aged 23, horsekeeper on farm, he was at The Green, Stanningfield with his widowed mother; brother Charles Oliver [16] domestic gardener and William Francis [12]; sister Gladys Winifred [9]. His father had died in 1908. On the pension card his mother was at Stanningfield. |

He enlisted in Stanningfield.
The 2nd Suffolks crossed the Canal du Nord on 27th/28th September and despite stiff bombardment by Germans as they started the assault, they took Flesquieres, but James Anniss was among the 24 of the battalion who were killed.
