Edwin Robert Rawlings was born in 1919 (Risbridge Q4-1919 4A:1763), son of Frank Harvey and Kate RAWLINGS (née RAWLINSON) of Sturmer.


His father [36] a farm labourer and mother Kate [31] were at Challis', Sturmer in 1911 by which time there were 5 children, Florence [12], Elizabeth [10] Harry [7] Frank [5] and Lucy [3] (the last three being born in Withersfield).

In the 1939 register only brother Frank (junior) a horseman and his wife Emily have been found, at 11 Council Cottages, Low Sturmer. His father had died in 1930, mother lived until 1963, dying in Sturmer.


It was the day the German invaded France after what was known as the "phoney war". They rapidly pushed the Allied forces back to the coast. His unit were part of II Corps, being pushed back out of Belgium.


Edwin Rawlings is buried in Beuvry Communal Cemetery Extension, grave 1:C:5
