Leonard Frank Huffey was born in Tostock (3rd qtr 1895 Stow 4a:820), son of Mark and Sarah HUFFEY (née RAMSBOTTOM).
Baptised at St Andrew's Tostock on 29th September 1895.
1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Flatt's Lane, Tostock with his father Mark HUFFEY [41] farm labourer; mother Sarah [33]; sisters Florence [12] and Elsie L [5 months]; brothers James [10], Cyril [9], Herbert [7] and Victor [3]. All were born in Tostock. 1911 census...Aged 15, apprentice grocer/draper in Elmswell with George LOMAX (grocer/draper) and family. His parents were at Tostock Green with John (domestic gardener), Herbert (apprentice blacksmith), Victor Mark and Reginald [6]; Elsie and widowed grandmother Sarah Jane RAMSBOTTOM [67]. The pension card has his mother at Tostock Green. |
He enlisted in Hackney when resident there.
Having captured Sailly-Laurette on 8th, the battalion pressed forward on the 9th. The war diary has :- "9th..4:20 pm The battalion pushed forward and took CHIPILLY and established a line well in advance of the village, this line was handed over to the Americans, the battalion withdrawing to support positions with Bn HQ at CHIPILLY. Casualties 2 officers killed 2 wounded, Other ranks 15 killed 72 wounded."
