Morton Alfred Bowyer was born in Weston Colville (Linton Q3-1896 3B:511) son of Frederick and Adelaide BOWYER (née MARSH).

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at The Green, Weston Colville with his father Frederick BOWYER [29] coachman/domestic groom, born Stetchworth, his mother [25] and brother Marshall [4]. All except his father were born in Weston Colville.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was still at the Green, Weston Colville with his parents, sister Frances [8] and brother Owen [4], both born in Weston Colville. Brother Marshall was working in London.

1911 census...Aged 21, single, a shop assistant, he was at 334/348 Oxford Street, London. His parents were still at The Green, Weston Colville, brother Marshall was a drapery clerk,boarding at 22 Osterley Park Road, Southall, London. Sister Frances May was a housemaid at Brinkley Hall and brother Owen was with Morton at Messrs Marshall And Snelgrove, 16 Marylebone Lane, 334 and 348 Oxford Street, London

On the pension card his mother was at The Post Office, Weston Colville


He enlisted in London in July 1915.
The Battalion war diary has them at Blangy, and under attack from the Germans from early morning on 24th April at Bois de Hangard. The Battalion counter-attack failed due to one company not staying in touch and they were withdrawn late on 25th, but they had captured three machine guns and 65 prisoners. They were relieved in the line by the 8th Queen's that evening. Their objective was the line shown below.

The diary gives Blangy, but that must be Blangy-Tronville the map reference for their HQ was certainly in that area. The Germans were getting perilously close to Amiens.

CWGC shows 23 of the 2/9th Londons were killed on 25th April 1918, 15 have no identified grave.
