George H Chapman was born in Dullingham Ley (Newmarket Q3-1876 3B:516) son of Richard and Maria CHAPMAN (née STARLING).

1881 census...Aged 4, he was at Gypsy's Hall, Dullingham with his father Richard CHAPMAN [37] a carpenter; his mother Maria [37]; brothers Francis [13] a farm labourer, Will [10] and Chas [6]; sister Annie [10 months]. All were born in Dullingham Ley.

1891 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at The Green, Weston Colville with his parents (mother from now on recorded as born in Burrough Green); brothers Francis (sawyer), William (carpenter) and Charles(farm labourer); sisters Annie M.J., Ruth [7] born Dullingham, Roselena [4] and Elizabeth G [1] both born in Weston Colville.

1901 census...Aged 23, he was at The Green, Weston Colville with his parents (father now a wheelwright); brothers Charles (farm labourer); sisters Annie, Rose and Lizzie

1911 census...Aged 34, single, a farmer, he was head of household at The Green, Weston Colville with his brother William (journeyman carpenter) and William's family, wife Rebecca [43], bornWeston Colvile, their son Stanley George [9] born Weston Colville and daughters Ethel Rose [6] and Evelyn Grace [1] both born in West Wratting. His parents were at The Fox, Weston Colville where father was publican, with brother Charles (farm labourer) and niece Lilley Ellen [18] born Weston Colville (parentage not known).


He enlisted in Newmarket.
Battalion war diary:-
They were in the sunken road from Fampoux to Hyderabad Redoubt. On the 10th they were consolidating. A section of 12th M.G.Coy., got into very good positions supporting us. Orders for the attack to continue. Objective the GREEN LINE as laid down in original operation orders. Moved into Assembly positions in HUMID and HOSACK trenches and sunken road from FAMPOUX to HYDERABAD REDOUBT. The cavalry to pass through us at 4 pm. Snow and very cold. At about 4 pm a company of the SOMERSETS went over to attack the INN at H.7.a.3.8.(ref map 51B NW). Attack failed. Some cavalry appeared about 4:15 pm. Still no orders for the attack to continue.
6 pm orders received to resume normals positions. Patrols sent out reported enemy positions along the ROEUX - GAVRELLE road. Night quiet. Casualties 5 OR killed 9 OR wounded, 2 OR missing.
