BROWN [TWITCHETT], Bertie

No.8470, Private, Bertie BROWN
Aged 24

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on Friday, 26th March 1915

Bertie TWITCHETT was born in Barking, Essex, son of Kate TWITCHETT
Dates connected with Kate Twitchett are confusing !, but no birth registration has been found to suit what details we do have. His mother married John BROWN (Linton Q4-1893. His birth registration has not been identified. The 1901 census has him as TWITCHETT, but the nearest birth registration is Thomas Bertie BROWN, née; THOMAS (West Ham qtr3 1892-4a:133)

1901 census...Aged 9, Bertie Twitchett was at Streetly End, West Wickham with his stepfather John BROWN [39] shepherd, born West Wickham; his mother Kate [28] born Clare; half sisters Minnie [6] and Nadia L [3]; half brothers Leonard [4] and Felix J [9 months). All his half brothers and half sisters were born in West Wickham

1911 census...Aged 19, now Bertie Brown, a farm labourer, he was at West Wickham with his step-father and his mother, half brothers Leonard (farm labourer) and John (Felix J); half sisters Nadia, Mildred [8], Louise [6], Stella [4], Maggie [2] and Una [1 month]. There is some confusion with the children as the census records 9 children of the marriage, crossed out and replaced by 8. This can be accounted for by Bertie not being of the marriage, but does not explain where Minnie is, since no children are recorded as dying.

He enlisted in Haverhill, from his number, in about 1912. He was in France by 16th January 1915, before moving on to the Ypres Salient
Dying of his wounds it is impossible to be sure where or when he was wounded, but on 24th March the battalion were in trenches near Kemmel and Lt Selby and four other ranks were wounded. He died at No 15 Field Ambulance.
