Aubrey Sidney Radford was born in West Wratting (Linton Q3-1897 3B:492) baptised in West Wratting on 17th October 1897, son of John William and Mary RADFORD (née JAGGARD).

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at The Waggon and Horses Inn with his father John W RADFORD [35] carrier/publican; his mother Mary [33] boron in Burrough Green; brothers Oliver [13] and Woodlock [6]; sisters Evelyn [10] and Sybil [7]; grandmother widowed Mary RADFORD [71]. All were born in West Wratting except his mother.

1911 census...Aged 13, he was still at the Waggon and Horses with his parents, brother George Ernest Cyril [8]; sisters Sybil May, Elsie Sylvia Cicely [4] and Lillian Doris [2] and aunt Hannah RASH [54] widow born West Wratting as were the new siblings. (All 8 survive)


His Army records that survive are mixed in with Pte W.Whale from Cambridge, but these facts are definitely Aubrey's. He enlisted in Newmarket on 17th January 1916 and was placed on the Reserves. He gave his age as 18 years 6 months, was 5 feet 4 inches (162.6 cm) tall, chest 36" to 38.5" (91.4 to 97.8 cm), a pantry boy from West Wratting, father William.
Mobilised on 11th May 1916, he joined the 9th Battalion, Royal West Kents on 14th May, posted to 9tjh Battalion on 1srt September then to base depot on 12th before embarking for the BEF, where he reported to the 6th Battalion on 9th September 1916.
War diary:-
Trenches north of Monchy 4th - Before dawn elements of Battn holding front line were relieved by the 6th Bn Queen's Regt and were placed in support. Trenches shelled intermittently throughout the day. At 11 pm the Battn was relieved by 7th Bn Norfolk Regt.
They returned to BROWN LINE, behind the FEUCHY Road.
