Ernest George Jacobs was born in Withersfield (Risbridge Q1-1894 4A:723), baptised in St Mary's Withersfield on 4th February 1894, son of John and Elizabeth JACOBS (née HAZELWOOD).

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Rose Hill Cottages, Withersfield with his father John JACOBS [45] horsekeeper; his mother Elizabeth [42]; sister Ellen M [13] and brother Victor W [3]. All were born in Withersfield.

1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was still at Rose Hill Cottages with his parents and brother Victor William (farm labourer). His mother had lost 5 of her 13 children. His father died in 1920. Rose Hill was the family home after the war.

His brother Victor served as 13242, Private in 9th Suffolks. His brother Frederick, a Battery Sergeant Major in the Artillery died Scotland in 1919 as a result of illness attributed to war service see here


He enlisted in Haverhill.
He died of his wounds in No 23 General Hospital, Etaples. Without his Army service record it is impossible to say where or when he was wounded. The battalion had been in the trenches in the Ypres salient.
