Born in Bardwell on 17th April 1897 (2nd qtr 1897 Thingoe 792)son of John and Ellen Sophia SHARMAN (née WALES)

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 3 Carr Lane, Bardwell with his father John SHARMAN [39] shepherd born :Langham; his mother Ellen [23] born Ixworth; brothers Charles [5] and Harry [2]. The children all born in Bardwell.

1911 census...Aged 14, a labourer, he was at 122 Eastgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father; brothers Charles (labourer)and Harry; sister (Rosa) May [9] born Bury St.Edmunds. His mother was not found in this census.

The pension card records his aunt Mrs Ellen O'Dell of 60 Alleyns Road, Stevenage and Baker Street, Stevenage. His father is recorded at Old Farm Timworth and then Water lane, Radwinter.

His brother Harry died of wounds in 1918 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. His card on the International Red Cross records of prisoners of war has not been found. This is the usual source of information about PoWs, so we have no ides where he was captured or the circumstances of his death.
The roll of honour has him in the 3rd Battalion, CWGC in the 1st and his medal index card in the 2nd Suffolk ?.
The Bury Free Press on 26th June 1915 has Fred (in 1st Battalion) on the list of missing
