Born in Bardwell (1st qtr 1899 Thingoe 4a:866) son of John and SHARMAN (née WALES)

1901 census...Aged 2, he was at 3 Carr Lane, Bardwell with his father John SHARMAN [39] shepherd born :Langham; his mother Ellen [23] born Ixworth; brothers Charles [5] and Fred [3]. The children all born in Bardwell.

His sister Rosa May was born in Bury St.Edmunds in 1903

1911 census...Aged 12, he was at 122 Eastgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father, brothers Charles and Fred (both labourers) and sister (Rosa) May [0] born Bury St.Edmunds. His mother is not found in this census.

The pension card records his aunt Mrs Ellen O'Dell of 60 Alleyns Road, Stevenage and Baker Street, Stevenage. His father is recorded at Old Farm Timworth and then Water lane, Radwinter.

His brother Fred died of wounds in 1915 as a prisoner. see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. With no service record it is impossible to say hwere or when he was wounded. The war diary is virtually unreadable but the battalion were operating around Le Mesnil for most of September 1918
