Aged 37

H.M. Submarine "Olympus, Royal Navy
Killed on Active Service on Friday, 8th May 1942

"De profundis paratus" - Out of the deep, I am ready
Peter DAWSON was born in Harwich in 1905, (Tendring Q2-1905 4A:756) son of Alice DAWSON. His father has so far not been identified.

1911 census...Aged 6 he was at White Horse Yard, West Street, Harwich with his grandmother Susan DAWSON [59]; his uncle John Henry DAWSON [24] a quay labourer and aunts Edith [20] and Emily [13] and Nelson Charles Dawson {14 months](apparently his brother). All Harwich born.

He was a staff member of Culford School.

He married Edith Kate Valentine JACOBS in Ipswich in 1930 and they lived in Park Gate Cottages, Flempton Road, Culford in 1939. There is one closed record. His widow later remarried, to Walter WARNER in Bury St Edmunds in 1944..

HM Submarine Olympus was part of 8th Flotilla, HMS Maidstone, Gibraltar.
The Olympus had an un-happy history of mechanical faults, but on her final voyage it was the enemy that sunk her. On 8 May 1942 Olympus struck a mine and sank off Malta in approximate position 35°93'N, 14°56'E. She had just left Malta on passage to Gibraltar with personnel including many of the crews of the submarines Pandora, P36 and P39 which had been sunk in air raids. There were only 9 survivors out of 98 aboard. They had to swim 7 miles (11 km) back to Malta. 89 crew and passengers were lost with the ship.

It seems most likely that the mine was laid by Schnellboot S-31, which vessel was blown up by one of its own mines two days later, laying another minefield off Valetta.
