Arthur BUMPSTEAD was born in Whepstead (4th Quarter 1888 Thingoe 4a673), son of William and Elizabeth BUMPSTEAD (née BASS).

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Old School Road, Whepstead with his father William BUMPSTEAD [34] farm labourer; his mother Elizabeth [30]; half sister Alice BALL [7]; brothers William [4] and Harry [7 months]. All were born in Whepstead

1901 census...Aged 12, he was at School Road, Whepstead with his parents; brothers William [14] farm labourer, Harry [10] and Fred [7], also Percy Hardy [1].

1911 census...Aged 22. a farm labourer, he was at Chedburgh Road, Whepstead with his widower father and brothers Willima (contractor's labourer), Harry (domestic gardener) and Fred (farm labourer)

His brother Harry had died of wounds on 1st May 1917. see here


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds., Suffolk Regiment No. 2954, later re-numbered

The 5th Suffolks were engaged in the 3rd Battle for Gaza. The attack was scheduled for 3 am on 2nd November, the objectives being the enemy lines from Umbrella Hill to Sheikh Hassan by the sea, a front of some 3,000 yards., the furthest point (Sheikh Hassan) being 3,000 yards from the British front line. As soon as the barrage lifted the 5th battalion dashed into the front line trenches of El'Arish redoubt, B and D Companies leading with A and C in support., and the line was soon cleared. By 7th all the Turks had gone and Gaza belonged to the Allies, but at the cost to the 5th Suffolks of 150 casualties.
