Derrick William SAVOY was born in 1922 (1st qtr 1922 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:1666) son of William and Alice SAVOY (née SPARKE)

In the 1939 register his parents and brother Gerald were at The Lodge, Bradfield Combust, plus two others. Brother Gerald [14-1-1920] was an AC2 No.569909 in the RAF with 107 Squadron

Looking closely at the images I have at the head of each brother's entry here, I am sure that the Bury Free Press photo of Derrick is the same as the one on Roll-of-honour.com for Gerald. I am in no position to decide which is correct.

His elder brother Gerald was killed in an air accident in Bedfordshire in 1941 see here

He was Wireless Operator / Air Gunner on Avro Lancaster MkIII ser no ED819, c/s ZN-U of 106 Squadron, which took off from RAF Syerston on a night raid on Munich.
The crew were Pilot - P/O RD Large; FltEng - Sgt D Smith; Navigator - F/O RE Pavier; Bomb Aimer - P/O WS Neathway; WOP - Sgt DW Savoy; Mid Upper Gun - F/Sgt F Weaver; Rear Gun - Sgt TG Goodwin. All were killed
They took off at 19:55 on 6th and nothing more was heard from them. They crashed on the southern edge of Munich and were all buried in Grünald Forest Cemetery
It was Derrick's 8th mission, the first of this particulr crew.



The whole crew were reinterred at Durnbach on 23rd July 1948
