In the 1939 register Gerald as at home at the Lodge, Bradfield Combust with his parents and two others. He was recorded as an AC2 with No 107 Squadron RAF His younger brother Derrick was killed over Germany in 1943 see here

were killed. Sgt VC Akes RAAF - pilot; Sgt ER Bowman - pilot; Sgt RJ Clark -Wop/AG ; died from their injuries. Cpl J Dawson - ;Cpl J Mainwaring - Cpl SH
Atkinson - were injured. It is thought there were a further 4 aboard who were uninjured. This menat there were 5 more on board than a usual complement. The elevant file AIR 81/11178 (P364904/41) has not been digitsed so intl a visit is made to Kew, exact details are unknown.
