Bertie Montague Knott was born in Ixworth (3rd qtr 1882 Thingoe 4a:616) son of Herbert Oliver and Emma KNOTT (née HOLMES ).
1891 census...Aged 8,he was at Thetford Road, Ixworth with his father Herbert KNOTT [31] carpenter; his mother Emma [28] born Bradfield Combust; brothers Herbert [10], Willie [4] and Frederick [2]; sister Cesira [5]. All except his mother were born in Ixworth. 1901 census...He has not been found in this census, At Greyhound Lane Ixworth were his parents (father now a wheelwright as was brother Herbert, Willie Percy [7], Ernest [6]; sisters Cesira, twins May and Ethel [4] and Rosina [1]. The new siblings all born in Ixworth. He married Agnes Ellen SHINN [24-2-1884] at St Anselm, Westminster on 10th December 1905. 1911 census...Aged 28, he was a domestic coachman, living at Seer Green, Beaconsfield, Bucks, with his wife Agnes [27], born Creaton, Northants; son Montague Ernest [14-3-1906] born St Georges, Westminster, and daughter Evelyn [1] born Seer Green. Eveleyn died in Amersham in 1913 There were two other children, Ernest John [7-6-1911] and William Charles Arthur [14-1-1914]. He enlisted in Amersham, Bucks when resident at Chalfont St Giles.
The war diary has :- 9-4-17....Attacked TELEGRAPH REDOUBT at 7:30 am. A certain amount of bunching was caused by Battalion on our right losing direction and K.S.L.I. who had to go through us - failing to wait for the lift of the barrage.thus finally mixing up with the battalion's leading wave. Three M.G. were knocked out by L.G. fire and rifle grenades. About 150 German prisoners taken. The objective was reached and consolidated Casualties were as follows - officers killed 5, wounded 8, ORs killed 45, wounded 116, missing 41.......by 11 am the HARP was practically safe and men returned to dug-outs rested The Telegraph Redoubt was close to where Bertie was first buried (see image below). The objective gained was practically the whole of Telelgraph Hill which also included HARP REDOUBT
