Ernest Knott was born in Ixworth (2nd qtr 1895 Thingoe 4a:794) son of Herbert Oliver and Emma KNOTT (née HOLMES).

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Greyhound Lane Ixworth with his Herbert KNOTT [41] a wheelwright; his mother Emma [39] born Bradfield Combust; brothers Herbert [20] wheelwright, Willie [14] and Percy [7]; sisters Cesira [15], twins May and Ethel[4] and Rosina [1]. All except his mother were born in Ixworth.

1911 census...Aged 5, a farm labourer, he was still at Thetford Road, Ixworth with his parents; brothers Fred (cowman), Arthur (baker's assistant), Percy,(farm labourer); sisters May, Ethel and Rosie. All 11 siblings survive.

On the pension card his mother (wholly impaired) was still at Thetford Road, Ixworth

He enlisted in Ixworth.
The battalion had been at the CHALK PIT , but on 5th had gone back to the support line and were working on trenches, a quiet day. Just Ernest and L/Cpl George Pizey being killed. Both were found later and re-interred in Dud Corner Cemetery
