Charles Moss was born in Lawshall (4th qtr 1888 Sudbury 4a:656) son of Levi and Emma MOSS (née BETTS)
1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Potash Farm,Lawshall with his father Levi [42] farm labourer; his mother Emma [42] born Hawstead; brothers Levi [18]and Harry [15] both farm labourers, Walter[12], Herbert [8] and Frederick [5]; sister Martha [6]. All except his mother were born in Lawshall. 1901 census...Aged 12, he was at Donkey Lane, Lawshall with his parents; brothers Harry and Walter, both farm labourers, Frederick and Thomas [7]; sister Emma. 1911 census...Aged 22, he was "near the King William", Lawshall with his parents and brothers William, Harry, Frederick and Thomas. All the men were farm labourers. His mother had all 10 children living. On the pension card his father was in Lawshall. His brother Thomas was killed in 1917, serving in the Suffolk Regiment. see here |
He attested in Sudbury on 11th September 1915 and was mobilised in the 3rd Suffolks on 16th May 1916 in Bury St.Edmunds. He gave his age as
26 years 1 month, a machine feeder from The King William, Lawshall, next of kin his father from Lawshall. He was 5 feet 5.5 inches tall,
chest 36 to 39 inches, weighing 134 lbs.
He was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on 28th July 1916, then sent to the BEF on 25th September and posted to the 149th Company Machine Gun Corps on 8th October 1916 and posted missing on 14th November 1916. Presumed to have died then. Army Form 5080 in 1919 has living blood relatives as father, brothers William, Levi, Harry, William, Herbert and Frederick, sisters Emma and Martha. His mother had died (in 1918). The war diary has not been found, so there is no way of saying where he was killed.
