Born in Ipswich in Q3-1888 [Ipswich 4a:789 recorded as TOMLINE], eldest son of Arthur and Ellen TOMLIN (née RICHARDSON) of Albert
Street, Newmarket.
1891 census...Sydney R TOMLINE [2] was at 9 Milton Street, Ipswich with his father Arthur [38] a coachsmith born Cambridge, his mother Ellen [40] born Hunstanton, sister Martha L. [13] born Hunstanton, brother Arthur E. [11] born Cambridge, brother James H. [9], born Hunstanton and sisters Catherine F [7] and Emily F.[5] both born in Hunstanton. 1901 census...Sydney R [13] was in Albert Street, Newmarket with his parents, sisters Emily F amd Mildred R.[8] born Ipswich, and brother Charles A.[6] born Ipswich. 1911 census...Sydney Robert [22] was a carman, at 46 Great Northern Street, Huntingdon, lodging with Samuel and Alice Chapman. His parents and brother Charles were still in Albert Street, Newmarket. He married Rose Ethel JENNINGS on 4th April 1914 and they lived at 4 St Mary's Terrace, Newtown, Huntingdon. Their son Arthur Sydney was born on 12th January 1915. Their 2nd son died in infancy in 1916. His sister Emily not only lost her husband James McManus but two brothers as well in WW1, and her son in law William WADE in WW2 (he married Maria Moira TOMLIN). James McManus ... Albert TOMLIN... He enlisted at Grove Park on 8th December 1915. 5' 6" (167.6 cm) tall and 35 inch (88.9 cm) chest, weighing 168 lbs (76.4 kg).
Posted to the Reserves.He was mobilised on 19th April 1917.
He left Bulford and embarked on SS Leicestershire at Devonport on 27th November 1917, arrived Bombay 16th January 1918 and embarked immediately on HMT Etna?,
arriving in Mesopotamia at Basra on 12th February 1918.
He appears to have been ill on and off for most of the latter half 1918 and early 1919. He died of influenza and bronchitis on the HMT "Huntsend", near Malta, on his way home for demob, presumably close to the island since he is buried in Malta. His widow was awarded a pension of 26/8 per week plus 10/= for their son. |
