Born in 1859, 2nd qtr in Bury St.Edmunds 4a:477, son of Robert and Mary ADAMS (née REYNOLDS)

1861 census...Aged 2, he was at 3 Lion Court, Southgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his faher Robert [40] labourer; his mother Mary [36]; brothers John [13], James [11], Robert [5]; sisters Mary Ann [9], Eliza [7]. All born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1871 census...Aged 12, he was at 3 Lion Court, Southgate Street with his parents, father now Paving Commissioner's labourer; sister Eliza [18] clothes factory hand; brother Robert [15] brick yard labourer,

1881 census...Aged 28 (sic), a labourer, he was at 28 Eastgate Street BSE with his sister Eliza and her husband Joseph T.HILL [28] a carman, and their sons Joseph R [7] and Arthur [6]

He married Charlotte HILL in BSE in 1883 [4th qtr 4a:1131].

1891 census...Aged 29 (sic), a horseman, he was at 67 Southgate Street, BSE., with his wife Charlotte [24] a tailoress and their daughters Flora [7] and Edith [5] and son Henry R [4].

1901 census...Aged 39, a UDC carter, he was at 67 Southgate Street, BSE, with his wife Charlotte [34] tailoress; daughters Edith [15], Jessie Eliza [11], Laura May [9], Hilda Mary [7] and Jessie Eliza [1]; sons Henry Robert [14] errand boy, Sidney James [5] and Victor Joseph [3], twins Ernest R and George Kimberley [1] (1900 2nd Qtr in Bury St.Edmunds 4a:897). All were born in Bury St Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 56, a UDC carter, he was at 2 Raingate Street BSE with his wife, now recorded as having borne 14 children 15, a gardener's assistant he was at 2 Raingate Street, BSE with his parents, father now recorded as 56, mother as 43 and having born 14 children. His daughters Flora [27] and Edith [26] were recorded as married and deleted, Jessie Eliza was [22] also deleted, Laura May [19] was a machinist at a clothing factory, Hilda Mary [17] was mother's help, Charlotte [5]: son Henry Robert [24] a soldier signaller was also deleted. The other brothers, present, were Sidney James [15], a gardener's assistant, Victor Joseph [13], Ernest Robert [11], George Kimberley [11], Willam Edward [9], John [6] and Arthur Alfred [18 months]

Sidney's pension card has his mother at 39 Raingate Street, Bury St.Edmunds. Sidney was killed in 1917 see here


Henry, with three sons, had gone out to check on a horse. As they were passing the St Mary's Vicarage in Prussia Lane, between Southgate Street and Raingate Street, the bombs fell. He and George were killed, the other sons survived.
