1901 census...Aged 5, he was at 67 Southgate Street, BSE, with his father Henry [39] UDC Carman; mother Charlotte [34] tailoress; sisters Edith [15], Jessie Eliza [11], Laura May [9] and Hilda Mary [7]; brothers Henry Robert [14] errand boy, and Victor Joseph [3]. All were born in Bury St Edmunds. 1911 census...Aged 15, a gardener's assistant he was at 2 Raingate Street, BSE with his parents, father now recorded as 56, mother as 43 and having born 14 children. His sisters Flora [27] and Edith [26] were recorded as married and deleted, Jessie Eliza was [22] also deleted, Laura May [19] was a machinist at a clothing factory, Hilda Mary [17] was mother's help, sister Charlotte was 5. Brother Henry Robert [24] a soldier signaller was also deleted. The other brothers, present, were Victor Joseph [13], Ernest Robert [11], George Kimberley [11], Willam Edward [9], John [6] and Arthur Alfred [18 months] The pension card has his mother at 39 Raingate Street, Bury St.Edmunds. He enlisted in BSE. The 2nd Suffolks were in the Wellington Caves in Arras on the night of 8/9th April. At 00:45 the battalion left the cave, companies movng at half hour intervals in the order Y-Z-X-W 05:30 - General attack began.The battalon took its objective with complete success. Casualties 1 officer killed, 2 wounded; OR 18 killed, 69 wounded, 12 missing. The battalion remained in the captured German trenches. |
