Born in 1895 (3rd qtr Chesterton 3b:447) son of Walter Price and Alice Rebecca BARTON (née RICE)

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 4 Vinefields, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Walter BARTON [38] maltster born Haverhill; his mother Alice [37] born Bartlow, Essex; sisters Ellen [10] born Bury St.Edmunds and Mary [9] born Cambridge; brother James [11] born Bury St.Edmunds and Harry [3], born Chesterton.

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was 2 Vine Fields, Eastgate, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents,father now a carter and recorded as born in Cambridge, mother in Chrishall Grange; sister Ellen [24] Clara [10] born Bury St Edmunds; brothers Harry[13] and Albert [5] born Bury St.Edmunds; cousin May [11 months] parentage not recorded, but seemingly illegitimate daughter of Ellen.. The ages of all of them have changed

The pension card has his mother moving to 19 Pelican Court, Eastgate, Bury St.Edmunds

His brother James joined the Leicestershire regment for 6 years in 1909, was in France by 8th Nov 1914 and was discharged on 4th January 1916
He had an elder brother, William Samuel Rice BARTON who died in the Army Service Corps in see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.CWGC have him in 12th baattalon, other Army docments have 1st. The 1st, 2nd, 12th and 15th Battalion The Royal Irish Rifles were all involved on 2st March when the German Kaiserschlacht began. SW of St Quentin the 1st and 15th RIR and the 16th RIR (pioneers) were involved as part of the 36th (Ulster) Divsion. The 2nd Bn RIR had been relieved by the 15th RIR. The war diary has not been fond, but it was a black day for all concerned, the Ulster Division being over-run and suffering very heavy losses, mainly captured.
