BARTON, William Samuel Rice

No.M2.222334, Private, William
Aged 32

801st Mechanical Transport Coy., Army Service Corps
Died of illness on Monday, 9th December 1918

Born in 1886 ( 1st qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:728) son of Walter Price and Alice Rebecca BARTON (née RICE )

1891 census...Aged 4 (recorded as Wilby Barton) he was at 6 Russell Court, Cambridge with his father Walter BARTON [26] carman born Birdbrook, Essex; his mother Alice [34] born Chrishall Grange; brother James [1] and sister Ellen [3] both born in Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...Aged 15, he was boarding at 19 St.Edmunds Place, Bury St.Edmunds with James Tho.RICE [46] bricklayer's labourer and his wife Mary Elizabeth [39] born Hawkedon.

1911 census...Aged 25, a cab driver, he was still at 19 St.Edmunds Place boarding with aunt Elizabeth RICE [49] single, born Barrow and her brother James [56] labourer, single. There is possibly some confusion here as to relationships.

He married May Frances MIDDLEDITCH [24-2-1893] in 1st qtr 1916 in Bury St.Edmunds.
The pension card has his widow May Frances at 7 Northgate Cottages, Bury St Edmunds with their daughter Joyce Dorothy May, born 12th August 1918. She re-married, to William MEARS in 1924 in Bury St.Edmunds.

His brother James joined the Leicestershire regment for 6 years in 1909, was in France by 8th Nov 1914 and was discharged on 4th January 1916
He had an younger brother, Walter BARTON who died in the Royal Irish Rifles in 1918 see here

There is a particular problem with William BARTON, on the roll of hnour, both are in the Army Service Corps. The record here is almost certainly of William Samuel, and he seems to have been "farmed out" to relatives after he was 5, but who was the other ?

H He died of pneumonia according to his pension card. Admitted to 84 FA on 26 Nov, died 28 General Hosptal 9 Dec. This theatre of war was no safer than the Western Front, except that disease (usually malaria) accounted for 20 casualties for every 1 due to enemy action.
