Born in 1893 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a 768) son of Charles and Louisa Fanny BUCKLE (née VIGOR)

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at 1 Horringer Road, Spread Eagle, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles [41] inn keeper born Rougham; his mother Louisa [38] born Mayfield Sussex; sisters Alice H [13], Minnie [11] and Alice L [10]; brothers Percy [6] and William R [3]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 17, assisting family business, he was still at the Spread Eagle with his parents, ssters Maud (lady's maid) and Alice ( draper's assistant); brother William.

Hs mother died in 1913. At the time of his death, his parents were at 15 Horringer Road, Bury St.Edmunds. The pension card has his father c/o Fairchildes, Warlingham, Surrey.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Having missed the horrific 1st day on the Somme, the 7th Suffolks moved up for a frontal assault on Ovillers. Assaulting in eight waves, the leading one starting 10 minutes before zero, which was set for 3:15 am. The first 4 waves got to the German 3rd line, some penetrating the village. In the darkness however the following waves failed to make touch and the Germans were able to rush in and cut them off. At the 3rd line of resistance fierce fighting took place which led to the attack coming to a standstill and the battalion losing heavily. Only 4 officers were not casualties, a total of 470 casualties were recorded.
