No.202055, Private, William Robert BUCKLE
Aged 21

7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
formerly 1917, Suffolk Regiment
Died of Illness in Captivity on 1st May 1918

Born on 15th November 1897 ( Bury St.Edmunds 4a ) son of Charles and Louisa Fanny BUCKLE (née VIGOR)

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 1 Horringer Road, Spread Eagle, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles [41] inn keeper born Rougham; his mother Louisa [38] born Mayfield Sussex; sisters Alice H [13], Minnie [11] and Alice L [10]; brothers Frederick [7] and Percy [6] All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 13, assisting family business, he was still at the Spread Eagle with his parents, sisters Maud (lady's maid) and Alice ( draper's assistant); brother Frederick assisting in business.

His mother died in 1913. At the time of his death, his parents were at 15 Horringer Road, Bury St.Edmunds. The pension card has his father c/o Fairchildes, Warlingham, Surrey.

His brother Frederick was killed on the Somme in 1916 see here

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Reported in Bury Free Press of January 1918 as missing. He was captured on 30th November 1917. The battalion had moved back to Reserve but the German counter attack on 30th caught up with them . Heavy casualties followed and at some time William was captured. Enquiries were made by Mr.M.Buckle (bro ) of 151 Gwydir Street, Cambridge Mill Road, this could actually have been sister Maud. It does seem as if the family had moved to Cambridge for some time.

In essence, he was captured unwounded at Cambrai on 30th November 1917
and died at Military Hospital in Tournai on 1st May 1918 from dysentery.
