Born in Ely in 1892 (4th qtr Ely 3B;516) son of William Arthur and Mary Jane HOXLEY (née GREEN)

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Broad Street, Ely with his father William Arthur HOXLEY [45] born Barnstable, Devon; his mother Mary Jane [37] born Bury St Edmunds; brothers John Frederick [16], William Henry [10], Albert Edward [5], Charles Thomas [3] and Arthur William [1]; sisters Elizabeth Helen [14] and Mary Jane [7]; widowed grandmother Elizabeth Ann [77] born Kent. All the children were born in Ely.

1911 census...Aged 18 he was a Private in the 2nd Suffolks at Barrosa Barracks, Stanhope Lines, Aldershot. His parents were at the Cattle Market, Bury St.Edmunds (father an Army pensioner and Toll Collector) with his sister Mary Jane [17]; brothers Albert Edward [15], Charles Thomas [13] and William Arthur [11].

At the time of his death his mother was at 1 Victoria Street, Bury St.Edmunds.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
Dying of wounds at No. 85 Field Ambulance and in the absence of his army records it cannot be said where or when exactly he was wounded. Dying at a Field Ambulance would indicate proximity to the action and the same day

Joseph Hoxley is buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece 3:H:7
He is also commemorated with his brother William on the war memorial at Dagenham Village,Essex.
